Leading Lady Suffragist Sojourner Truth

Leading Lady Sojourner Truth was an abolitionist, a suffragist, an equal rights & temperance activist, and a crusader of Human Rights. She met with President Abraham Lincoln, and with Ulysses S. Grant in the White House, and she worked on the re-election campaign for President Ulysses S. Grant. She tried to vote and was turned away. She was a women’s rights advocate, and an avid speaker, and referred to herself as a preacher of the “Truth”. She became the first woman in the history of the United States to win a court case against her former enslaver, which provided her the ability to recover her son from an illegal sale into the deep south to bring him to freedom. She posthumously became the first black woman honored in the. U.S. Capitol with a bust of her likeness.

Please take note that Sojourner’s story contains details regarding her youth in enslavement. Be prepared to read this with children, and answer questions they may have about this time in our history. Many children are not learning about the realities of enslavement and the impact that it has made on our country, however, children are intelligent and they are our best advocates for change and growth if we provide them with the facts of history. Sojourner has been deemed to be one of the 'Most Important  Americans of All Time' for a reason. We owe our children the truth of history. We can share these facts with sensitivity for the audience learning them.
