Leading Lady Pearl Payne was a ‘Radium Girl’. Unlike many of the Radium Girls we learn the stories of, Pearl lived a long life. Not without serious health complications, including several tumors, and sadly, she lost the ability to have the large family that she always wanted. Thankfully, she and her husband had one daughter, and her health sustained her. Pearl joined the lawsuit agains Luminous Paint, continuing the fight to the Supreme Court. Learn how Pearl’s tenacity helped change history. U.S. workers today remain safer in their work environments due to the fortitude and commitment of the dial painters who fought to hold U.S. Radium accountable for their actions.
The artwork created for Pearl's paper doll is my artistic interpretation of her likeness based on the sources available to me. Please note that the sources and information regarding the Radium Girls contains graphic content pertaining to what happened to the dial painters, and caution should be heeded when read and viewed by young audiences. It is important to learn our history, even when it is difficult to do so.
The Leading Ladies Radium Girls series is a capsule collection created to honor the many women who lost their lives and health to radium. These women bravely shared the truth of what happened to them. Many were never compensated and spent years of their lives experiencing health complications due to exposure to radium from time working at U.S. Radium and Radium Dial. All artwork is the creation of InterArtist Jen Haefeli, Wild Root Creations®.
The Revolutionary Women Series is a capsule collection created for America 250. It explores the early settlement of the United States, highlighting selected women and folk heroines. This series explores delicate and difficult themes, while providing historical insight into the lives of women and girls that is often not taught. It is important that we learn it, have a better understanding of it, and learn from it.
The Leading Ladies of Suffrage Series, 100 Years + of Marching for Our Rights, The Revolutionary Women Series & The Leading Ladies in Flight & The Space Age series is back!
