Leading Lady Mary Ann Shadd Cary

Mary Ann Shadd Cary was a prolific Journalist, Abolitionist, Activist, Attorney, Editor, Educator, Feminist, Reformer, and she was the writer and publisher of The Provincial Freeman. the first newspaper owned and published by a Black woman in Canada and the first publication by a woman in North America. Her work served 35,000 people in both countries, delivering news on abolition, and provided hope to those hoping to be free one day.

She founded the Colored Women’s Progressive Franchise Association and she became the first Black woman to enter Howard University Law School. She was the second Black woman to graduate from Howard University with her Law Degree when she finished at the age of 60 after 14 years of classes, working and raising her two children as a widow after the loss of her husband.  Mary Ann became the First Black Woman to actively recruit for the Union Army, and she was the first Black woman to speak at a National African-American Convention. Mary Ann became a suffragist, too!
