At the age of 16 years old, high school student Mabel Ping-Hua Lee rode a white horse when she led 10,000 people as they marched from Washington Square Park up Fifth Avenue in New York City in the women’s suffrage parade. It was May 1912, and Mabel was Chinese, living in the United States through the Boxer Indemnity Scholarship, which granted her a visa to attend the Erasmus Hall Academy school in Brooklyn. She was already a well-known Suffragist.

Mabel’s family was one of the few allowed to immigrate during the Chinese Exclusion Act. It is unclear whether she ever earned the right to become a United States Citizen. She did, however, become a successful and passionate immigrant and voting rights activist, seen as a trailblazer who gave speeches and wrote articles that, once published, paved the way for history to change for many like her.

Read all about how Mabel mobilized her community to support the women’s right to vote and, in doing so, made significant contributions to the women’s suffrage movement, providing equal educational and political opportunities to many for decades. She did this, though the democracy she advocated for was denied to her by those who received it.
