Leading Lady Nina Otero-Warren

Maria Adelina Isabel Emilia “Nina” Otero-Warren seemed to have lived many lives in one. The list of her accomplishments is vast, and her advocacy remains today. Nina was the Vice President and the Chair of the New Mexican branch of the Congressional Union, which became the National Woman’s Party, or the NWP. She was an Activist, a Community Leader, a Reformer, an Educator, and she became the first Superintendent for Santa Fe’s Public schools. Nina also served as the Inspector for the Indian Schools in Santa Fe, where she advocated for students and the retention of the customs and their family bonds. Nina became the first Hispanic woman to run for Congress. She also served as the Director of the Literacy Program of Adult Education for the State under the Works Project Administration, and on the Executive Board for the American Red Cross.

Nina’s contribution to Suffrage cannot be understated. She recognized that residents of New Mexico would support the amendment if they understood the distributed content. She emphasized the need for content to be available in both English and Spanish. Her awareness and advocacy made a crucial impact in helping New Mexico ratify the 19th Amendment. 

Learning more about Nina Otero-Warren and the impact of her work is awe-inspiring. Her accomplishments remain impactful in education and women’s rights, making her a true leader deserving of respect and remembrance, and gratitude.
