Leading Lady Albina 'Bena' Maggia Larice, who was known as Bena, was known as a 'Radium Girl'. Measuring just 4’ 8” tall, Bena was a very short, beloved Maggia sister, who worked along with her three sisters as a dial painter for the United States Radium Dial Corporation located in Orange, New Jersey.
Bena Maggia was one of the five women who sued Radium Dial after she and her sisters and fellow dial painters experienced radium poisoning. Bena's sisters, Quinta, Mollie, and Irma Maggia, all fell ill and also eventually passed away from radium poisoning.
Learn why Bena's contribution to the story is vital, and how exposing what was happening to dial painters helps modern day workers! The Maggia family lost four daughters, and Bena's story is important to know.
The artwork created for Bena Maggia's paper doll is my artistic interpretation of her likeness based on the sources available to me. Please note that the sources and information regarding the Radium Girls contains graphic content pertaining to what happened to the dial painters, and caution should be heeded when read and viewed by young audiences. It is important to learn our history, even when it is difficult to do so.
The Leading Ladies Radium Girls series is a capsule collection created to honor the many women who lost their lives and health to radium. These women bravely shared the truth of what happened to them. Many were never compensated and spent years of their lives experiencing health complications due to exposure to radium from time working at U.S. Radium and Radium Dial. All artwork is the creation of InterArtist Jen Haefeli, Wild Root Creations®.
